The New York Department of Environmental Conservation has fined a Niagara Falls, Ne York, landfill $75,000 and ordered it to take steps to reduce odors. This comes after an investigation by DEC of sulfur and garbage odors, according to an Associated Press (AP) report.

The Republic Services Landfill along Interstate 190 and Niagara Falls Boulevard was identified as the culprit. A consent order with the DEC is requiring the landfill to install a gas collection system and operate flares to burn off landfill gas. It is also requiring the landfill to reduce sulfur odors from wastewater before discharging it into the sewer system.

Phoenix-based Republic Services must also study landfill gas emissions to identify air contaminants and determine what additional controls should be installed, the article states.
