Saratoga County constructed the landfill in 2001 but never used it. Finch purchased the landfill from the county in 2013. The report says Finch did not provide a reason for selling the landfill.
“The partnership we launched with Saratoga County in 2014 has worked,” a statement by John Brodt, Finch spokesman, says in the report. “It has provided a community with a safe, financially sound means of disposal of nonrecyclable waste and strengthened Finch Paper as we continue to serve as a trusted employer and vital part of our region’s economy. We look forward to working with the county and our community to bring about a smooth transition in the months ahead.”
The statement also says Finch as a long-term agreement with WM for its own waste disposal.
Revenue from a profit-sharing agreement related to the sale of the landfill to Finch Paper allowed the town of Northumberland to build a new town hall.
