The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) put out a reminder this week to ensure safety for waste collection workers by encouraging proper hydration and taking breaks frequently during the day.
Kirk Sander, chief of staff and vice president of safety and standards for NWRA, remarked, “With springtime here and summer rapidly approaching, it is critical we inform workers on the importance of hydration, rest and shade." This reminder is part of the NWRA's Safety Monday initiative.
NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith also commented, saying, “We are pleased to provide this industry-renowned safety resource to anyone who requests it. You do not need to be a member of NWRA to receive it.”
This week, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) held a stakeholder meeting to discuss OSHA's efforts to protect workers from hazards related to warmer weather conditions. Kirk Sander, the NWRA Chief of Staff and Vice President for Safety and Standards, contributed to the stakeholder meeting on behalf of the organization.
Said Sander, “Our member companies have recognized the hazards associated with warm weather and have moved to institute programs to protect our front-line workers. The member companies make sure that their employees understand the risks and symptoms related to exposure to prolonged high temperatures.”
