The National Waste and Recycling Association (NWRA), Arlington, Virginia, released an issue brief Nov. 8 highlighting the benefits of landfill gas (LFG) as a source of methane. LFG is approximately half methane and half carbon dioxide and is an efficient fuel source that can be harnessed for powering communities.
“Modern landfills are highly engineered facilities with advanced technology. They are the most efficient method to dispose of solid waste. Landfills offer significant benefits to the communities [they] serve. The landfill gas that is captured at these facilities can be converted to generate electricity that powers those local communities,” NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith says.
Other uses of LFG include compressing the LFG to fuel vehicles and power gas turbines and converting it to electricity. The full issue brief can be found online.
