London, Ontario-based Convertus Group has announced plans to partner with Quebéc-based energy services firm Énergère on a discarded organics processing facility in the Mauricie region of Quebéc.
Convertus, which operates several organic landfill diversion and processing facilities in Canada and the United States, will work in collaboration with Énergère to design, build, finance and operate the facility in Saint-Étienne-des-Grès, Quebéc, under a 20-year operating contract.
The combined composting and anaerobic digestion (AD) facility is scheduled to receive its first materials in 2026 and will accept inbound material from throughout the Mauricie region between Montréal and Quebéc City.
The facility partners say it can “play a crucial role in promoting a circular economy and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for Mauricie Region’s 37 municipalities.”
“By combining Convertus’ expertise in organic waste facility design and operations with Énergère’s extensive knowledge in design and build projects and energy retrofits, the partnership will ensure successful delivery and ongoing operations” of the planned facility," Convertus says.
“We are excited to contribute to the sustainability goals of Mauricie Region’s communities by providing an innovative organic waste management solution,” Convertus Group CEO Michael Leopold adds. “Our full-service approach to designing, constructing and operating new organic waste processing facilities across North America ensures maximum resource recovery while minimizing environmental impact.”
The facility will deploy AD and in-vessel composting technology and have the capacity to convert up to 35,000 metric tons of diverted organic materials annually into renewable energy and nutrient-rich fertilizer and compost.
“Each step in reducing GHGs is a victory for our planet," says Mario Geoffrey, director of biomethanization at Énergère. "It is with great pride that we are committed, in symbiosis with our partners, to continuing this mission and wish to become, through projects such as [the] St-Étienne des Grès biomethanization plant, an inspiration for future initiatives.”
