The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has selected Kansas City, Missouri, to receive a $5 million Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) grant to expand recycling infrastructure and waste management systems throughout the city.

“We are thrilled to support Kansas City, Missouri, in its efforts to enhance recycling infrastructure and waste management systems,” says EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Macy. “This funding will not only improve local waste management practices, but also energize the economy, aligning with our core mission to protect human health and the environment.”

The EPA says Kansas City will use these funds to purchase trucks, develop infrastructure to enhance its organic waste collection and diversion program and improve the city’s composting and food rescue initiatives.

The program aims to expand the city’s collection program and partnerships with local markets to divert food waste to food banks. As a result, Kansas City expects to see increased efficiency in waste management practices, which will promote environmental stewardship within the community.

“Kansas City has long been committed to environmental sustainability, and this $5 million federal investment will significantly expand our composting and organic waste diversion efforts,” says Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas. “We've built strong programs to reduce food waste, and this funding allows us to take those initiatives to the next level. We're grateful to the EPA for recognizing our work and helping us continue building a more sustainable future for our residents.”

The EPA says its SWIFR grant program provides funding to improve postconsumer materials management and infrastructure, support improvements to local postconsumer materials management and recycling programs and assist local authorities in making improvements to their waste management systems.
