MarBorg takes over collection in parts of Santa Barbara County, California

MarBorg Industries, a Santa Barbara-based collection company, will take over solid waste disposal services from WM in unincorporated areas of Santa Barbara County, California, at the start of the new fiscal year July 1, Santa Maria Times reports.

MarBorg will take over services in the county’s Zone 4, which includes Santa Ynez Valley and areas around Lompoc, as well as Zone 5, which includes Orcutt and areas surrounding Santa Maria.

The change in service coincides with new collection rates and tipping fees approved by the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors.

Residents in the county’s Zones 1, 2 and 3 who have been served by MarBorg Industries will see collection rates rise by 5 to 6.5 percent, depending on area and specific services provided, according to the report.

For Santa Ynez Valley residents, residential collection rates will drop 7.3 percent while Lompoc-area residential collection rates will drop 1.9 percent. In Orcutt and Santa Monica, residential collection rates will rise 1.8 percent.  

Property owners in Cuyama Valley won’t see any change in the parcel tax they pay for waste collection this fiscal year but could see an increase next fiscal year, according to a report from the county’s public works department, because the current parcel tax doesn’t cover the full cost of collecting solid waste and operating the New Cuyama and Ventucopa transfer stations.

Tipping fees, which make up 50 percent of the total rate charged to customers for solid waste services, are increasing, county official say.

In Santa Ynez Valley, tipping fees will increase by 7.4 percent, while in Lompoc area fees will increase by 24.5 percent and in the Orcutt and rural Santa Maria areas by 20.3 percent.
