According to the Abilene (Texas) Reporter News, the city will extend the deadline to sign up for its curbside recycling program by one week to 5 p.m., Aug. 8, 2016.
The extension was announced at a morning news conference Monday, Aug. 1, by Mayor Norm Archibald, after only 900 residents signed contracts, the article says.
“As the mayor, I’m asking people to really come through because this has come down to a chance to decide whether we’re going to do this program or not,” they mayor said at the conference. “Your response in the next week will determine whether we think this is feasible and acceptable to move forward.”
The program will likely cost $5.57 to $7.35 monthly, assuming between 2,000 and 3,000 residents sign up, Mayor Archibald said. Costs will top $12 without more subscriptions.
“The cost of recycling is in proportion to the number of people who sign up to subscribe to this service,” Archibald said, the Abilene Reporter News notes. “We’re going to need a whole lot more people to come through in the clutch.”
