Bioenergy Devco, an Annapolis, Maryland-based anaerobic digester systems provider, has rebranded as BTS Bioenergy. The company says this name change aligns the organization’s U.S. operations with its European brand and wholly owned subsidiary, BTS Biogas.
“Changing our name to BTS Bioenergy marks a pivotal moment in our journey, one that unifies decades of global expertise and innovative technology,” BTS Bioenergy CEO Nick Thomas says. “By aligning more closely with BTS Biogas in Italy, we’re strengthening our shared vision to lead the world in organic waste transformation and energy creation.”
BTS Bioenergy currently operates more than 250 facilities, deploying anaerobic digestion technology to convert organic waste into renewable energy. At its organics recycling facilities, food waste is recycled through a naturally occurring process in which organic materials are broken down by microorganisms. The output is a soil amendment that can be composted or mixed to create topsoil. The fully enclosed system captures and collects the methane gas released during the process, creating a source of renewable natural gas (RNG).
“Together, we are building a more sustainable future through proven technology, operational excellence and an unwavering commitment to environmental progress,” Thomas says.
BTS Bioenergy currently operates the company’s flagship North American project, the Maryland Bioenergy Center. In 2024, the company says the organics recycling facility diverted the equivalent of 2,310 refuse trucks from landfilling or land application, while the avoided greenhouse gas emissions were equivalent to 10,674 gasoline-powered cars driven for one year. The company plans to continue its expansion in the U.S. throughout 2025.
