Bulk Handling Systems (BHS), Eugene, Oregon, is building a new Autonomous-Container-Loop facility in Grand Junction, Colorado.
The facility, which will be run by western Colorado-based Bruin Waste, marks the third deployment of BHS’ patented Autonomous-Container-Loop system.
The system is expected to be fully operational by June 2026.
“We are excited to be working with BHS to build a state-of-the-art materials recovery facility (MRF) in Grand Junction, Colorado,” Bruin Waste CEO Jeffrey R. Kendall says. “This exciting project marks a major investment in the future of recycling for the Western Slope and surrounding communities.”
The Grand Junction project will feature a 12 ton-per-hour automated single-stream MRF, artificial intelligence (AI) detection points and BHS’ debris roll and polishing screens. The facility will serve as the only automated MRF on the Western Colorado slope.
In January, Bruin Waste first announced plans for the new MRF in partnership with the city of Grand Junction. The 58,450-square-foot facility will use AI technologies.

In addition, the facility will include Max-AI AIR sorting, combining AI with high-speed air ejection for accurate recyclables separation. SpydIR-HS high-resolution optical sorting will use hyperspectral imaging to enhance identification and separation of materials, and a Total Intelligence Platform will provide monitoring of materials composition and overall system performance.
“The Grand Junction MRF will dramatically increase local capacity to sort and process recyclable materials using cutting-edge AI technology, allowing for a fully autonomous container recovery,” Kendall says. “We believe this project represents an important step forward in bringing the most advanced recycling technologies and automation to smaller communities where currently none exist while supporting future EPR [extended producer responsibility] legislation.
