Casella Waste Systems Inc., Rutland, Vermont, has been fined more than $24,000 after violating solid waste, wetlands and air pollution control regulations at its landfill in Southbridge, Massachusetts, by the state’s Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), a report by the Telegram & Gazette says.
The company agreed to address the identified issues at the 51-acre landfill and comply with regulations, the report says. The issues identified include failure to prevent erosion or discharge of pollutants through stormwater controls; failure to prevent leachate to groundwater; altering a wetlands resource without filing a notice of intent; failure to maintain a 6-inch daily cover over the landfill; accepting restricted materials; failure to comply with emission limitations for emergency engines and turbines; and failure to conduct landfill operations to minimize blowing litter.
According to the report, the issues were identified by the department in 2014, 2015 and 2016 inspections.
The Southbridge Recycling & Disposal Park will pay $24,331 of the $91,831 penalty fine to the state and will use to remaining $67,500 to fund an environmental project to Southbridge for stabilizing bank erosion and washout areas impacting the rails that run along a nearby river.
According to the report, Thomas Cue, general manager of the landfill, says the landfill is now in compliance with its operation regulations.
