The waste management company Casella Waste Systems Inc., Rutland, Vt., which confirmed in April that it was in discussions with the city of Biddeford, Maine, and the state of Maine regarding the sale of its Maine Energy Recovery Co.’s (MERC) waste-to-energy facility, says it has been told the Maine Senate has voted not to send a legislative bill on the sale to committee for consideration.
The terms of that potential transaction included a cash component of $7.5 million dollars, expected to be paid over time. The proposal also included Casella's acquisition of the Juniper Ridge Landfill from the state of Maine.
According to an article in the Portland Press Herald, legislators said there was not enough time to study the proposal and its effects before the end of the legislative session.
The article says the bill could be resubmitted in the next legislative session.
