CEC acquires Shepherd Engineering Design Co.

Transaction designed to broaden CEC’s engineering and consulting work in solid waste sector.

Pittsburgh-based Civil & Environmental Consultants Inc. (CEC) has acquired the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma-based civil and solid waste engineering firm Shepherd Engineering Design Co. Inc. (SEDCo).

CEC says the addition of SEDCo marks what it calls a significant step for CEC as it broadens its capabilities and expands its presence in the South and Midwest.

“This acquisition is part of CEC’s ongoing strategy and commitment to grow and diversify the Oklahoma City office,” says Dean Koleada, a CEC principal. “Welcoming the talented professionals and technicians from SEDCo allows us to add solid waste services such as engineering, design and permitting for transfer stations and landfills to our offerings.”

The deal for SEDCo follows CEC’s acquisition of Oklahoma City-based engineering firm KBGE in March 2018, which provided CEC with its initial presence in the region.

Jeffrey Shepherd, SEDCo’s founder, will join CEC as a principal and take the waste management practice lead in the Oklahoma City office.

“Transitioning our business to CEC will enable the continued expansion of our practice,” says Shepherd. “CEC’s diverse offerings will allow my team to provide a wider range of services to our solid waste clients on a national level. We’re proud to build on our company’s work from the past 14 years as we grow with CEC.”

CEC and SEDCo have partnered on projects in the past, and both parties say they see the acquisition as a mutually beneficial endeavor. A recent joint effort by the two companies was a construction quality assurance project for Houston-based WCA Waste Corp. at its Northeast C&D Landfill in Spencer, Oklahoma.

CEC indicates SEDCo currently is working with Central Disposal LLC, an Oklahoma-based solid waste company, to expand its landfill capacity.
