London, Ontario-based Convertus Group has acquired the AIM Group, a fellow service provider in the treatment and processing of discarded organic materials.
Convertus says the transaction will bring together “two of the country’s most experienced players in organic waste processing.”
Acquired assets include AIM facilities and operations that previously had been owned by Maple Reinders Group, a Mississauga, Ontario-based construction services provider, and its founder, Theo Van Wely.
AIM is involved in large-scale organic processing for all waste streams, including food, leaf and yard; industrial, commercial and institutional, or IC&A; and dewatered biosolids. The firm lists locations in five Canadian cities.
“In combining two industry leaders with successful track records, we are solidifying our presence as Canada’s largest organic waste processor, allowing us to better serve our customers and fulfill our mission to close the loop and create a sustainable future for all,” Convertus CEO Mike Leopold says.
Since being established in 2019, Convertus has acquired New Brunswick-based Envirem Organics in 2022 and an operational facility from Freestate Farms in Manassas, Virginia, last year.
The AIM acquisition will result in “a strong team" of over 350 individuals, with 19 sites across three countries, five provinces and two states, processing more than 900,000 metric tons of organics each year, according to Convertus.
The company will then convert that material into more than 85,000 gigajoules of renewable natural gas and more than 550,000 metric tons of marketable compost annually.
“By joining forces with an industry leader whose values of innovation, one team and commitment seamlessly align with ours, we are entering a new and exciting chapter,” Wely says.
“This partnership strengthens our ability to serve municipalities, businesses and communities nationwide. I’m personally committed to supporting a smooth transition and will continue to work closely with the Convertus team to ensure continuity in operations and to pursue future growth for our combined organization.”
