The Dubuque, Iowa, Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency (DMASWA) has announced it has discontinued a partnership program with asphalt contracting firm L.L. Pelling to collect and recycle asphalt shingles. According to local press reports, the lack of markets for recycled shingles was the reason L. L. Pelling requested discontinuing the program.
According to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, based KCRG-TV, customers paid $29 per ton, and Pelling received $25 on each ton. The program diverted around 550 tons of shingles per year when it was active.
While the program has been halted, the DMASWA says if markets for the recycled asphalt shingles improve, the agency may reinstate the program.
