EDL Energy, a global producer of sustainable distributed energy headquartered in Brisbane, Queensland, has acquired U.K.-based GWE Biogas and its East Yorkshire Sandhill Biogas Plant.
Since 1991, EDL Energy has operated in the U.K., with a presence in Australia, Canada, the U.S. and Greece. The company specializes in waste coal mine gas, remote energy, landfill gas, renewable natural gas and more. GWE Biogas will now be part of the EDL Energy group but continue operating under its existing name.
The acquisition aims to extend the company’s global renewable energy portfolio and strengthen its operations in the U.K.
“Anaerobic digestion is a natural complement to EDL Energy’s extensive landfill gas and renewable capabilities, with many parallels to our existing operations,” James Harman, CEO of EDL Energy, says. “We are delighted to welcome the talented GWE Biogas team into our global business.”
The Sandhill Biogas Plant has been operating since 2011 and services local and national customers as one of the most advanced anaerobic digestion operators in the U.K. The facility produces up to 750 cubic meters of biomethane per hour, which is then injected into pipelines operated by EDL Energy’s sister company, Northern Gas Networks.
It also features a 4.5 megawatt combined heat and power plant, with excess supplied to the national electricity grid. In addition, the facility captures approximately 5,511 tons (5,000 tonnes) of biogenic CO2 annually. According to GWE Biogas, the Sandhill Biogas Plant produces enough renewable electricity to supply approximately 8,000 homes and enough renewable biomethane to power another 6,000 households annually.
In addition to renewable energy, the plant produces a nutrient-rich digestate.
“We’re very proud of the business we have built at Sandhill and the jobs that have been created over the past 17 years,” EDL Energy co-founders Mathew Girking and Tom Megginson add. “This transition creates opportunities for innovation, collaboration and growth, and we’re excited about what joining EDL Energy will mean for our people, customers and communities.”
