EPA launches Feed It Onward Initiative for food waste reduction

The initiative aims to reduce food waste and address food insecurity across the U.S.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched Feed It Onward, an initiative geared toward reducing food waste and addressing food insecurity across the U.S. The voluntary program supports partnerships with farms, food brands, grocery stores, military bases, restaurants and more to encourage food donations within communities.

Lee Zeldin, EPA administrator, made the announcement at Illinois’ Scott Airforce Base alongside leadership from Illinois-based Frey Farms, the initiative’s first partnership. The group provided fresh produce, otherwise destined to become organic waste, to feed members of the military and their families living on the base.

“Feed It Onward highlights how Americans of all walks of life, from our farmers, service members, business owners and government, can join hands and help our fellow Americans,” Zeldin says. “We hope this initiative will help amplify the Americans working each day to help their fellow citizens.” 

According to the EPA, it is estimated that more than one-third of all food in the U.S. is thrown away and uneaten. Data from the organization’s 2025 “Estimating the Cost of Food Waste to Consumers” report found that consumers individually lose an estimated $728 annually to food waste, with a family of four contributing approximately $3,000 worth of food waste each year.
