FBI search at former New Jersey landfill possibly linked to Jimmy Hoffa

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has renewed its search for former Teamster union leader Jimmy Hoffa, The New York Times reported. According to Mara Schneider, a spokesperson for the FBI’s Detroit field office, the agency had gotten a search warrant to survey a former landfill below the Pulaski Skyway connecting Newark and Jersey City in October.

According to the FBI, federal agents surveyed the former landfill on Oct. 25-26 and are now analyzing its findings. 

"Because the affidavit in support of the search warrant was sealed by the court, we are unable to provide any additional information,” Schneider said during a press conference held last month.

While Schneider did not comment on what exactly they were looking for, it is believed to be linked to the former union leader.

The belief is bolstered by the fact that the FBI had received numerous tips that Hoffa was buried in a New Jersey landfill in 1975. In 2019, Frank Capolla, whose father owned the former landfill, said in an affidavit that his father buried Hoffa 15 feet from the landfill in a steel drum, The New York Times reports.

Jimmy Hoffa served as president of the powerful Teamsters union from 1957 until his imprisonment for conspiracy and fraud in the late 1960s. He is suspected of having connections with the mob and went missing in July 1975. He was declared legally dead in 1982.
