Houston-based FCC Environmental Services, which provides environmental and waste and recycling solutions across seven U.S. states, has completed the acquisition of Wheelabrator South Broward Inc., the owner of the South Broward Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Facility in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from WIN Waste Innovations.
FCC announced its intention to purchase the Wheelabrator South Broward in late April of this year.
The Broward WTE facility, which has been operating since 1991, transforms solid waste into energy, reducing landfill dependency while contributing power to the grid. Each day, approximately 2,250 tons of waste are processed, generating enough electricity annually to power more than 41,000 homes, according to FCC. The facility also recovers roughly 15,000 tons of metals annually for recycling.
The purchase expands FCC Environmental Services’ residential, commercial and renewable waste management capabilities across North America. Florida remains FCC’s largest U.S. operating hub, with the company serving more than 900,000 residential homes and thousands of commercial customers. With this addition, FCC Environmental Services says it strengthens its position, delivering end-to-end solutions to meet the growing demand for environmentally responsible waste services.
“This is more than a business transaction—it’s a strategic move aligned with our mission: Working responsibly today for a better environment tomorrow,” says Dan Brazil, CEO of FCC Environmental Services. “We look forward to partnering with Broward County and integrating this waste-to-energy operation into our expanding sustainable portfolio, based on proven methods from FCC Enviro’s global operations.”
FCC Environmental Services draws on the extensive global experience of its parent company, FCC Enviro, which has more than 50 years’ experience in energy recovery from nonrecyclable waste. FCC Enviro currently has 13 waste-to-energy energy recovery projects underway, processing 4.2 million tons of waste annually and generating a total power output of 410 megawatts.
Hunton Andrews Kurth acted as legal counsel to FCC Environmental Services, while Evercore was the company’s financial advisor. Kirkland & Ellis was Win Waste Innovation’s legal counsel.
