The Federation of New York Solid Waste Association’s Strive for Sustainability Conference, will run May 20-23, 2018, at The Sagamore in Bolton Landing, New York. This conference typically draws 20 percent new attendees each year, including many young professionals, the federation says. Abstracts are now being accepted to develop next year’s program.
Abstracts of up to 250 words will be accepted through Nov. 3 on any topic associated with solid waste, including waste reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, energy-from-waste (EFW) and landfilling operations. Topics which tie recycling and engineering together and are potentially PE credit eligible will receive immediate consideration as a direct result of attendee feedback from the 2017 conference. Abstracts can be submitted through the conference website at conference.nyfederation.org.
Presentations are generally 20 minutes, followed by questions and answers. The conference has expanded from its 2 ½ day format into 3 days of technical presentations. The breakout session tracks are designed to provide more in-depth discussions of solid waste and materials management issues. Topics for the 2018 conference are envisioned to include engineering design to technologies; product management; sustainability; waste diversion; legislation; electronics disposal; environmental outreach and education; organics; deconstruction; landfill closure and postclosure; EFW/alternative energy trends; regulatory and compliance concerns; special/hazardous waste management; legal/contracting issues; and safety.
This is the 19th year the conference will take place at The Sagamore on Lake George. The federation says the conference draws upwards of 700 attendees from around the northeast, midwest, south, Canada and Europe.
