Seminole County, Florida, commissioners recently mandated that two local waste hauling companies convert their collection fleet to compressed natural gas (CNG) engines, a report by the Orlando Sentinel says. The companies will be going through conversions over the next three years.
Waste Pro of Longwood, Florida, and Advanced Disposal Services of Ponte Vedra, Florida, municipal solid waste and yard waste pickup for 65,000 homes in unincorporated Seminole County. The report says the companies will be required to replace their collection trucks with CNG-powered trucks by 2020. The mandate will not apply to recycling trucks or trucks that collect commercial waste, the report says.
Both companies have already begun to convert their fleet to CNG-powered engines, the report says. Advanced Disposal currently houses 95 CNG trucks, including ones in Orange County, Fort Myers and St. Augustine. The company also recently opened a CNG fueling station in Orlando.
The report says Waste Pro also opened a new facility in Sanford.
Each CNG truck costs about $50,000 more than a traditional diesel-powered truck but equipment purchases are covered by the companies and not through residential price increases.
Orange County touted success in the report of their 2015 action to require waste haulers to use CNG trucks for collections. All 114 of the trucks running in Orange County are now CNG powered. Jim Becker, Orange County solid waste director, says the noise level of the trucks has dramatically reduced since the mandate implementation.
