Fontaine expands Peterbilt Model 220 dual-drive modification

The sit-down dual-drive conversion could enhance refuse collection, street sweeping and more, according to Fontaine.

Charlotte, North Carolina-based Fontaine Modification is expanding the sit-down dual-drive steering conversion offering for its Peterbilt Model 220 cab-over-engine trucks.

Fontaine began offering a left-hand steering modification in 2015 for Model 220 trucks that came exclusively with right-hand steering.

The new sit-down dual-drive conversion allows drivers to operate the Class 6/7 medium-duty truck from either the left-seat position or the curb side of the cab. According to Fontaine, this allows drivers to adapt to operational needs across a variety of applications, including refuse collection, pavement maintenance, street sweeping and paint striping.

When sit-down dual-drive is added to a truck, drivers can switch from driving on the left or right side of the vehicle by flipping a switch. The controls at each driving station are identical. This duality allows drivers to achieve better visibility of the curb when seated on the right side and can make driving through traffic easier when seated on the left side, says Fontaine.

The company performs conversions at its modification center in Garland, Texas, using original equipment manufacturer components whenever possible. This allows customers to service trucks at their local Peterbilt dealer.

“With Fontaine’s sit-down dual-drive modification, drivers get the best of both worlds, as they can transition smoothly from one side of the cab to the other as needed throughout the day,” Fontaine President Jamil Young says. “Fontaine engineers have configured the right-side driving position to maintain similar ergonomics of the OEM left-side position. This helps make drivers more comfortable and productive throughout their shifts.”
