South Carolina sanitation district recycles more than 8,000 tons in the fiscal year

The South Carolina Solid Waste Policy and Management Act of 1991 requires state agencies to report annual recycling and buying recycled activities to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s (DHEC’s) Office of Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling.

For fiscal year 2017/2018, Greater Greenville Sanitation (GGS) in South Carolina reported a recycling increase of nearly 800 tons versus the previous fiscal year, bringing the overall total to material recycled to 3,700 tons.

In addition, GGS reported that customer participation in its roll cart recycling program, launched in 2016, now exceeds that of the previous curbside bin program with continued, strong demand.

Additional recycling of organics and construction and demolition (C&D) debris pushed GGS’s total recovery efforts to slightly more than 8,000 tons for the fiscal year.

“We are very encouraged with these numbers,” Chuck Lagrange, GGS public information officer, says. “We are finally seeing the investments made in education and improved collection methods pay off.  Helping to keep materials out of the landfill is a win-win for everyone. Now our focus will be to reduce the number of contaminants in the recycling stream to meet the new material quality standards imposed by China.”

Established as a Special Purpose District in 1968, GGS provides full-service, nonhazardous, waste and recovery solutions to nearly 60,000 residential and commercial customers in Greenville County.
