Claire Windsor, the 2018 valedictorian of Travelers Rest High School in Travelers Rest, South Carolina, has been given the 2018 Greater Greenville Sanitation District Sustainable Schools Program Environmental (SSP) scholarship.  Winsdor was chosen from students across the Greenville County School District and will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

The scholarship is given to recipients by the Greater Greenville Sanitation District (GGSD), Greenville, South Carolina, as part of its Sustainable Schools program, which was developed to advance sustainable solid waste practices through education and are designed under the guidance of GGSD’s Education Advisory Council.

“One of Claire’s biggest accomplishments while at Travelers Rest High was a recycling program that she single-handedly researched, implemented, promoted and evaluated,” Michael Eudy, the science department chair at Travelers Rest High, says. “As an adviser on this project, it was amazing to watch Claire work so hard to try and get her fellow students to buy into the recycling campaign.”

Graduating seniors who are pursuing a degree related to the environment, public education, waste management or sustainability can apply for the SSP scholarship. Finalist are selected based on their past work in their school and/or community to help with waste minimization.

While at Travelers Rest High School, Windsor has been an officer in Beta Club, National Honor Society, Lions Club and the ecological awareness club, TR Green. This fall she plans to attend the University of South Carolina Honors College to double major in Global and Environmental studies.
