Landfill fire damages five hauling trucks in Arkansas

Little Rock officials had already approved the purchase eight new side-load trucks.

A fire at the Little Rock (Arkansas) Solid Waste Facility’s landfill damaged five garbage trucks worth $1.3 million the morning of Feb. 4 and caused delays in city waste removal services, a report by KATV says.

Little Rock Solid Waste officials believe the fire started in one truck and spread to the four others next to it, the report says. Regular pick-up will remain on a normal schedule but yard waste was temporarily suspended for a week and a 60 percent reduction in service occurred for special request pickups.

Luckily, city officials were prepared after city board members approved $2.2 million in funding to buy eight new automatic side-loading haulers in January, the report says. Four of the new trucks are in Little Rock and need to be outfitted as Little Rock-branded vehicles before starting its route.

According to the report, all five vehicles were insured. A claim has been filed but the ongoing investigation on the trucks will likely have to be completed before the claim is approved.
