Havila and Nordsol partner to develop 3 bio-LNG production plants in Norway

Havila Biogass, based in Norway, has selected Dutch company Nordsol as its technology partner for the development of three identical liquified biogas (LBG, bio-LNG) production plants in Norway. The facilities will be located in Haugaland, Trøndelag and Innlandet, and are scheduled to start operations in 2027-2028.

At each site, organic waste from agriculture and aquaculture, such as manure and fish waste, will be processed into biogas. Nordsol’s LBG production technology will then purify and liquify the biomethane into LBG to support the decarbonization of Norway’s industry and transport sectors.

“We chose Nordsol for their proven, reliable and cost-efficient technology, but equally for the expertise and project approach of their people,” Havila Biogass CEO Kjell Evensgård says. “Together, we are accelerating the scale-up of sustainable energy systems and taking another major step toward a circular, carbon-negative energy future.”

Each plant will produce approximately 100 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of LBG per year. According to both companies, these three projects represent the largest single national commitment to biomethane production and industrial decarbonization to date.

In addition to these projects, the two companies will work together under a partnership agreement to develop more than 400 GWh of additional LBG capacity in the coming years, bringing the total to over 700 GWh of LBG. This is expected to more than double Norway’s current biomethane supply.
