Zurich-based Hitachi Zosen Inova AG (HZI) will participate in the United Nations (UN) COP 28 Climate Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), from Nov. 30 to Dec. 12.

The waste-to-energy (WtE) technology firm's appearance at COP 28 in being conducted in partnership with Dubai Municipality and with the Swiss Startup Village exhibit area.

The COP 28 event, according to HZI, coincides with the opening of what it calls the world’s highest-capacity WtE plant, which has been designed to divert 2 million metric tons of discarded materials from landfills annually. The facility, which features HZI technology, will be able to generate power for 120,000 Dubai homes per year, the firm says.

This year’s COP event in Dubai marks HZI's first-ever involvement in the UN Climate Change Conference.

As part of its participation, HZI will have a display in what is called the “Green Zone” for businesses. HZI will help sponsor kiosks of six Swiss sustainability startups and will take part in presentations and panel discussions in its role as a sponsoring partner of Dubai Municipality.

“Being invited to this landmark event in partnership with the Swiss Embassy and the Dubai Municipality constitutes recognition of the hard work that our people do every single day, all over the world,” says Bruno-Frédéric Baudouin, CEO of HZI.

“And it shows that the business we are in—helping countries meet their climate goals through evolving waste management infrastructure—is seen as an important contribution to a sustainable future for us all."

A panel discussion in which HZI will have a presence is titled “No Time to Waste: Closing the Climate Loop.” Also taking part is the UAE Ministry of Environment & Climate Change.

HZI also will play a role in an “Evening at the Swiss Embassy” event being held in Abu Dhabi, another UAE emirate. That event is intended to allow guests of COP 28 to discuss how smart waste management infrastructure can help cities achieve their sustainability goals.

Tours of the Dubai WtE plant, designed and co-operated by HZI, will be conducted for select attendees throughout the COP 28 conference.
