Kansas county opens new C&D pit at landfill

The Ellis County, Kansas, Environmental Services Department has opened a new construction and demolition (C&D) pit at the Ellis County Landfill. As reported by the Hays Post, the opening of the new put marks the completion of an over two-year-long project.

Land for the Ellis County Landfill expansion was purchased back in 2020, and the county has since been working to obtain permits to complete construction.

Construction of the expansion was completed by Ellis County employees, equating to more than $100,000 of savings in the solid waste budget.

The new construction and demolition cell is split into a southern and northern half. Currently, dumping is only permitted in the southern portion. The dumping area will progress south until it's full. At that time, dumping will begin filling in the north, the Hays Post reports.

This new cell is projected to last approximately eight years, and future expansion cells are already planned for the property.

Accepted material at the construction and demolition pit includes concrete, wood, drywall, roofing materials, bricks, fiberglass and additional C&D debris. The current tipping fee is $45 per ton, with a $10 minimum (440 pounds or less).
