A worker at the Seneca Meadows Landfill near Seneca Falls, New York, was reportedly killed in an on-the-job accident on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016.
According to an online report by the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, the 55-year-old worker was “struck by a tractor-trailer that was in the process of unloading.”
At the time of the accident, the worker was “operating a tipper machine [that is] used to empty the trash containers carried to the landfill on trailers,” says the newspaper. The truck was in the process of backing up onto the tipper unit.
The Seneca Meadows Landfill, operated by Canada-based Progressive Waste Solutions, is described by the Democrat & Chronicle as “the largest active landfill in New York state,” employing more than 150 people.
Progressive Waste Solutions is currently attempting to finalize a 20-year contract with New York City to continue to accept a portion of the city’s municipal solid waste (MSW) at the facility, with some of it potentially arriving by rail.
