A solid waste municipal landfill is being proposed near Ridgeland, Mississippi in Madison County. According to an article in the North Side Sun, a proposal at the same site on North County Line Road was denied in 2010. The proposed landfill would be east of the Madison South Landfill located on the same road and often referred to as “Little Dixie.” That landfill is nearing the end of its useful life.
NCL (North County Line) Waste LLC, is proposing the same landfill, says the report. The previous proposal was met with opposition, according to the article. That landfill was denied because it only included a 250-foot variance and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) was requiring a 500-foot variance.
The new landfill proposes a 250-foot variance between the edge of the waste area and the NCL property line, and a 500-foot buffer zone between the waste area and the nearest residences. It would be 166 acres, including 77 acres of wooded area and 89 acres for the waste site.
NCL Waste had a meeting with residents near the proposed landfill Feb. 21. MDEQ representatives have not yet taken any action on the proposal. A public hearing likely will take place in mid-summer.
