The Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment (LASAN) department Christmas Tree Recycling program has returned in 2020, with the goal of collecting up to 100,000 trees so they can turned into mulch and compost available free to residents for gardening and to city staff for landscaping.
“Our Christmas Tree Recycling is one of our most successful and important environmental programs each year,” says LASAN Director and General Manager Enrique C. Zaldivar. “Angelenos do a great job in properly recycling their trees, and we appreciate the support as they are reused as mulch and compost that is available free to residents.”
New this year is a pilot program where residents can request a free curbside tree collection through Amazon Alexa in English or Spanish by downloading an app onto their smartphone or Amazon assistant device. LASAN says it has partnered with Salesforce, Amazon, Slalom and Scale Capacity on the pilot program, which it calls the first in the country.
Residents have several options to divert their trees away from the landfill and toward the recycling program, including: cutting up their tree and placing it into their own green waste bins; simply leaving it on the curb to be picked up on their weekly collection day; or dropping the tree off at one of 13 Los Angeles Fire Department stations, or one of several parks or LASAD district facilities.
