An article in the Brownsville Herald, Brownsville, Texas, reports that McAllen, Texas commissioners agreed to hold off on raising recycling fees for residents in a meeting Monday, July 11, 2016.
Commissioners voted unanimously to raise the fee for garbage collection from $11.39 to $12.50 per month and to raise the by-lot fee range for brush collection from between $3.18 and $15.58 to between $3.24 and $15.89.
According to the Herald, the commissioners were hesitant to vote on a proposal to raise the recycling fee from $2 to $2.25, as the city has a low number of recyclers.
“We have an issue with our recycling department,” Commissioner John Ingram said at the meeting. “It just doesn’t make sense to raise the fee if people aren’t using it. We need to look at the recycling department and try to figure that out first.”
