Pittsburgh-based Montauk Renewables Inc. has announced its entrance into South Carolina with the development of a new landfill gas-to-renewable natural gas (RNG) facility in that state.
The company expects to invest approximately $25 million in total project costs over the next 18 months, beginning immediately. In its announcement, Montauk does not mention the name or operator of the landfill or former landfill that will host the project.
The planned project is expected to contribute approximately 900 metric million British thermal units (MMBtu) per day of production capacity upon its commissioning. Montauk says the project is expected to be completed mid-2024.
“Montauk is excited to announce its entrance into South Carolina and the development of our newest RNG site,” Montauk President and CEO Sean McClain says. “This new project in South Carolina demonstrates the continued execution of Montauk’s diversified development growth strategy, as it continues to select and win projects in an increasingly dynamic industry.”
In 2022, Montauk reports its revenue figure for the year was $205.6 million while its net income checked in at $35.2 million.
Its 2022 RNG production figure was 5.5 million MMBtu, meaning the new project has the potential to add considerably to its production and revenue. In its 2022 earnings report, the company mentions landfill installations in North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania as currently operational.
Montauk Renewables is a renewable energy company specializing in the management, recovery and conversion of biogas into RNG. The company says it captures landfill-origin methane and converts it into either RNG or electrical power for the electrical grid.
