New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has approved a landfill expansion project despite a pending lawsuit filed by several environmental groups against the DEC in 2019.
The DEC issued three permits to the C&D Hakes Landfill, which is owned by Rutland, Vermont-based Casella Waste Systems, to expand the size of the landfill from under 60 acres to 80 acres, according to an online report by the Star Gazette.
The news outlet reports that the landfill accepts construction and demolition materials from Pennsylvania as well as other states. The lawsuit filed by the environmental groups claim that the C&D materials accepted at the landfill from Pennsylvania “contain unhealthy levels of radium and radon,” the outlet reports.
Casella also owns and operates the Chemung County Landfill in Elmira, New York.
