Northstar Clean Technologies Inc. has successfully reprocessed end-of-life, tear-off shingles into liquid asphalt, which was subsequently converted into solid asphalt pellets, at its Empower Calgary Facility.
On July 10, the company announced it had produced liquid asphalt from manufacturing waste shingles. Both manufacturing waste and tear-off shingles are typically discarded into landfills, Northstar says.
"Tear-off shingles represent the largest portion of the shingle waste stream, and successfully producing liquid asphalt from this material is an important step for not only the Calgary facility but more importantly, validates the robustness of the technical process," Northstar President and CEO Aidan Mills says. "This confirms the ability to produce high-specification asphalt from both manufacturing waste and tear-off shingles, and critically, confirms the process successfully pelletizes the liquid asphalt from tear-offs. Northstar's pelletized product creates substantial market access opportunities through the transport of a solid form product, effectively establishing it as a global commodity."
Additionally, Northstar has confirmed that its proprietary reprocessing technology can recover high quality liquid asphalt from both types of feedstock.
"In addition, we received the results from independent third-party labs confirming high quality specifications for the asphalt produced from both manufacturing waste and tear-off shingles,” Mills says. “These results, combined with the facility's ability to process both types of feedstock delivers on the primary objective of the business: to reprocess waste shingles into high quality products to provide a compelling value proposition for customers and shareholders alike."
Northstar hosted a virtual investor webcast Sept. 10 to provide operational updates and review quarter two financial results.
