Funded in part by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) YIMBY! Yes In My Backyard! grant, the Northeast Resource Recovery Association (NRRA) is offering free training in Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts over the next two months.
According to a NRRA news release, the goal is to provide technical assistance to small and medium generators of organic waste and highlight opportunities to divert more of that waste to composting operations, including residential backyards. The workshops will also review safe battery handling policies and procedures to reduce the risk of inadvertent injury, fire or leakage. These diversion efforts will extend the life of the few remaining landfills in in the region and help reduce the increasing budget line item for municipal waste, the association says.
NRRA invites solid waste facility operators, schools and businesses to learn composting basics and techniques, waste audit methodologies and safe handling of batteries. The YIMBY workshops will help attendees:
- learn organics management techniques
- increase understanding of the best management practices for waste batteries
- connect with community waste reduction efforts
- earn credits for professional development and certification
Attendees may select from five different workshops on each training date:
- April 9, Berlin, New Hampshire
- April 10, Lyndonville, Vermont
- May 2, Plymouth, New Hampshire
- May 10, Manchester, Vermont
