NWRA announces support for NYC’s waste safety plan

The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA), Arlington, Virginia, has announced support for rules adopted by the New York City Business Integrity Commission (BIC) aimed at making the waste and recycling collection industry safer in the city. The new rules include regular vehicle inspections, the placement of additional mirrors on trucks to reduce blind spots and more safety training.

“We strive every day to ensure our waste collection workers come home safe at the end of each day,” says Darrell Smith, president and CEO of the NWRA. “NWRA was pleased to provide input on the rules proposed by the New York City BIC. We support these regulations to make our industry safer.”

NWRA and its members have undertaken numerous initiatives that represent a comprehensive approach to improving safety for workers in the waste and recycling industry.

The NWRA board of trustees recently approved a significant financial commitment to form a partnership with the National Safety Council (NSC) to better understand the safety needs of the waste and recycling industry and develop resources aimed at making the industry safer.
