The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its comprehensive per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) action plan Feb. 14. The action plan identifies the steps the EPA is taking to address PFAS. PFAS are found in a range of consumer products that people use every day, such as cookware, pizza boxes and stain repellants.
The Arlington, Virginia-based National Waste and Recycling Association (NWRA) announced its support of the EPA’s action plan in its efforts to protect landfills from potential contaminants.
“The National Waste and Recycling Association is pleased that the EPA has released its action plan for PFAS. This issue is important to our members and we have been following it closely. NWRA looks forward to being a part of the process as we work with the agency to develop appropriate policies that are based on science,” NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith says.
Although the action plan does not specifically pertain to landfills directly, landfills are impacted due to potential additional requirements made by downstream receptors for their leachate. In addition, regulators are increasingly requiring landfills to conduct additional monitoring for the most common PFAS compounds.
