The effective date of a rule establishing minimum training standards for new commercial truck drivers has been delayed due to a Trump administration memo directing federal agencies to reassess certain regulations, a report by Overdrive magazine says. This is the third delay for this rule in 2017, which was originally set to be effective Feb. 6, 2017.
The Minimum Training Requirements for Entry level Commercial Vehicle Operators sets a standard of minimum classroom curriculum to be taught to drivers who are seeking their commercial drivers license (CDL). It also states that pre-CDL drivers must become proficient at behind-the-wheel operation at the discretion of a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)-approved trainer. The rule also establishes a registry of FMCSA-approved trainers.
The rule was published Dec. 8, 2016, the report says, before President Trump called for a regulatory freeze upon his taking office. The rule was also set to be effective March 21, then May 22, 2017.
