The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reportedly issued several final orders for Stony Hollow Landfill in Dayton. A report from the Dayton Daily News says the site has had hundreds of odor complaints from several surrounding communities over the last year. The landfill is owned by Houston-based Waste Management.
A $16,000 fine is among the 19 orders the landfill must follow to resolve the odor issues.
The city of Dayton also has reportedly barred Stony Hollow from discharging waste into its system. A class-action lawsuit has also been filed and Montgomery County is investigating alternative sites for solid waste disposal.
Landfill officials say they plan to comply with the guidelines established by Ohio EPA.
Waste Management Senior Public Affairs Manager Kathy Trent is quoted in the Dayton Daily News article, saying, “We agree with these orders and will continue to work closely with the Ohio EPA and other regulators to make sure Stony Hollow Landfill completes all action items on schedule and adheres to the standards outlined in the plan.”
