The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA), Arlington, Virginia, in partnership with the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), Silver Spring, Maryland, have issued tips for avoiding workplace violence Feb. 26 as part of their Safety Monday initiative.
These tips are meant to help collection workers stay safe while on the job.
Violence protection tips
- Don’t drive or work distracted: Avoid using mobile devices, cell phones, radios, etc.
- Learn where high-crime areas are on your route: If new to the route, ask your supervisor or other drivers who know the area.
- Scan the area: Scan the area you will be working as you approach in your truck.
- Be aware of suspicious people: Be alert for suspicious people loitering around the area you are going to be working.
- Keep your surroundings: Be alert to vehicles that may be following you while you are on your route. Write down a description of the vehicle, license plate number and the occupants.
- Avoid dangerous collections: If collections are scheduled at dangerous times in high-crime areas, try to reschedule to a time with better lighting and when the area is more populated.
- Protect your vehicle: Lock the doors when away from the vehicle for extended periods of time.
- Be visible: Be careful not to park in isolated areas to do paperwork or for a meal and rest breaks.
- Call 911: Don’t hesitate to call 911 in the event you feel threatened or see something suspicious
- Have a plan: Have a plan as to how you will react to specific situations so that if a crime occurs, you will not be caught completely off guard.
