Massachusetts City Continues Partnership with Covanta

Covanta SEMASS, L.P., a subsidiary of Morristown, N.J.-based Covanta Energy Corp., has signed an agreement to continue to handle waste disposal services for the City of Quincy, Mass. Under the agreement, Covanta SEMASS will take in Quincy’s municipal solid waste (MSW) at its energy-from-waste (EfW) facility in Rochester, Mass. Quincy generates about 35,000 tons of municipal solid waste per year.

According to a Covanta news release, the agreement with Quincy is a renewal slated to begin in July 2013 with the contract running for 10 years with mutual extension options after the initial term. 

Quincy also will continue to use an MSW transfer station in Braintree, Mass., that Covanta operates. The transfer station is currently undergoing construction for improvements, including measures to control odor from the facility and reduce noise from operations. MSW collected at the facility is transferred to the Covanta SEMASS EfW facility, where it is combusted to generate electricity for about 75,000 southeastern Massachusetts homes.

“The Covanta contract provides the City of Quincy with cost savings, continued dependability as well as predictability of our future solid waste disposal costs,” says Daniel Raymondi, Quincy’s Department of Public Works commissioner.

The Covanta SEMASS EfW facility, in operation since 1988, processes about 1 million tons of municipal solid waste and recovers nearly 50,000 tons of recyclable metals annually, according to the company.
