Recology’s board appoints pair of directors to help transform company

Kim Box and Jeff Stiefler have been appointed to help enhance corporate governance and oversight of company operations.

Recology, San Francisco, announced March 23 that its board of directors has appointed two additional directors, Kim Box and Jeff Stiefler, to help guide the company and its new leadership.

The company noted in a release that the moves were part of its continued efforts to “enhance corporate governance and oversight of company operations.”

The news comes after San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera announced March 4 that Recology would be lowering rates and reimbursing ratepayers close to $100 million for overcharges that were unearthed as part of a wide-ranging investigation into public corruption tied to former San Francisco Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru and others.

“It is my pleasure to welcome Kim and Jeff to the Recology board,” Recology chair Christa Steele says. “They are seasoned leaders who bring strong operational know-how as well as valuable, long-time experience serving on public and private boards. The breadth and depth of their perspectives will enhance our board’s ability to provide strategic oversight and guidance to Recology’s new leadership.”

According to the company, Box brings a strong record of executive leadership and board experience, with particular expertise in the areas of information technology, strategic results-driven leadership, and corporate transformation. Currently, she serves as an independent director on the boards of American River Bank, McGrath Rentcorp, and Applied Science Inc., as well as chair of the board of the Northern California Chapter of the National Association of Corporate Directors.

She is an experienced president and CEO, most recently leading Gatekeeper Innovation Inc. Previously, she worked at HP for 29 years in various leadership roles, including as vice president of global IT services, a $1 billion organization. She holds a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Chico, and completed the Executive Development Program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Stiefler, Recology goes on to state, brings extensive operational and board experience to the Recology board, with a career spanning financial technology, financial services, and business and consumer services companies. He previously served as chair, president and CEO of Digital Insight; president and director of American Express; and president and CEO of American Express Financial Advisors (now Ameriprise). In those roles, he has worked in heavily regulated industries and provided guidance and oversight on sophisticated compliance programs, the company says. Stiefler currently serves as lead independent director of FIS Global and as director of One Spa World. He has previously served on the boards of Worldpay, Vantiv, Touch Commerce, Square Trade, LPL Financial, VeriFone, and Taleo. Stiefler holds a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
