Recology purchases California waste company

Recology Humboldt County in Eureka, California, has announced its plan to buy Eel River Resource Recovery, Fortuna, California, and take over its solid waste and recycling services, a report by the Eureka Times-Standard says. Eel River employees will be retained, and there is no rate change.

Officials from both companies say the deal should be finalized by Aug. 1, 2017. The report says Recology will assume all operations except the scrap metal yard owned by Eel River in Fortuna.

Eel River has been in business for 30 years, has 100 employees and garbage and recycling routes in the California cities of Rio Dell, Fortuna and Ferndale and parts of unincorporated Humboldt County, according to the report. Eel Resource Operations Manager Kris Mobley says the owner is looking to retire and decided to sell the business.

Rio Dell and Fortuna city councils have already approved ordinances switching from Eel River to Recology, the report says.

Recology is based in San Francisco and operates across the West Coast. According to the report, the company is the fifth largest waste company in the U.S.
