ReMA board to consider changes to residential dual-, single-stream MRF specifications

Following the MRF Committee’s Feb. 27 approval, the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA) board of directors will consider making changes to its existing specifications for single- and dual-stream material recovery facilities (MRFs).   

Inbound Residential Single Stream and Inbound Residential Dual Stream are the materials derived from recycling methods where residents of a community place allowable materials in a specifically designated receptacle to be left at a drop-off point outside their residences. The MRF Specifications Committee recommends adding paper cups into inbound single- and dual-stream specifications of acceptable types of paper.

Materials allowed under the Inbound Residential Single Stream specification:

1. Uncoated white office paper
2. Magazines
3. Paper towel rolls
4. Plastic jugs and containers
5. Aluminum, tin and steel beverage containers
6. Glass jars and bottles (must be clean and dry)
7. Paper cups (proposed addition)

Materials allowed under the Inbound Residential Dual-Stream specification:

1. Uncoated white office paper, printing and writing paper
2. Newspaper
3. Cardboard
4. Empty PET (No. 1)
5. Plastic bottles, jugs and jars
6. Cartons
7. Bulky rigid plastics such as crates, buckets, totes and baskets
8. Aluminum and tin beverage bottles
9. Paper cups (proposed addition)

The full board can choose to adopt, amend or reject the recommendations of the division or table them pending further review.
