Republic Services shows off new landfill-gas-to-energy plant

Phoenix-based Republic Services has unveiled its newest landfill gas-to-energy facility at the Pinehill Landfill near Longview, Texas. The renewable energy facility will be able to generate more than 400 million cubic feet of natural gas per year, reducing carbon emissions equal to that of 19.8 million gallons of gasoline consumed, says the firm. The Pinehill Landfill serves customers and communities in more than 40 counties and 62 cities in Northeast Texas.

“We believe in leading by example in everything we do,” says James Murphy, general manager of Republic Services. “The modern landfill presents new opportunity to harness energy from yesterday's waste and convert it to meet tomorrow's fuel and energy needs. We are proud to generate a renewable energy source that makes a meaningful and lasting environmental difference in our communities.”

Landfill gas-to-energy projects involve capturing methane as organic waste breaks down. The gas can be processed to meet natural gas pipeline quality specifications, converting organic waste into a fuel and energy source.

Republic has more than 225 employees in Northeast Texas who serve more than 62,000 households and more than 8,700 commercial and industrial customers. Republic owns and operates five landfills, five hauling divisions and 125 collection vehicles in the region.
