Republic Services, Phoenix, has announced that it will not be accepting certain types of plastics from residents throughout Southwest Idaho in 2018, the Idaho Statesman reported Jan. 2. Republic Services' guidelines prohibit recycling plastics numbered 3-7. Plastics 1-2, such as those found in detergent jugs and milk, soda and juice containers, are still accepted by the company. The guidelines went into effect Jan. 1; however, residents will still be permitted to recycle all plastics until the spring, according to Mike Journee, spokesman for the city of Boise.
The move comes as a response to increased Chinese restrictions on imported plastics that have made it difficult to find recycling facilities to take certain materials.
Journee noted that the city is “close to finding a solution” for the banned plastics, but no plan has been made public.
