Florham Park, New Jersey-based Reworld and Pasco County, Florida, have marked a major construction milestone this month with the placement of the final steel beam at the Pasco County Thermomechanical Treatment Facility (TTF). Reworld says this moment celebrates the progress of a $260 million project intended to boost local waste processing capacity.
County Administrator Mike Carballa and all five county commissioners joined Reworld executives and project teams onsite to commemorate the achievement.
The expansion includes the addition of a fourth boiler and is expected to increase annual processing capacity by 160,000 tons.
“Our goal is to recycle as much as we can, as smartly as we can,” Pasco County Solid Waste Director Kevin Pliska says. “After that, we focus on recovering the remaining value from what’s left through waste-to-energy, which powers our community.”
Reworld, formerly Covanta, rebranded its waste-to-energy (WTE) incinerator assets to thermomechanical treatment facilities alongside its wider company rebranding last year.
The company has operated the facility since it first opened in 1991, partnering with the county throughout the expansion. Once complete, the project will increase energy output from 29 megawatts to 44 megawatts per hour, Reworld says.
“Reworld is proud to support Pasco County’s commitment to sustainable waste processing,” Reworld South Region President Amir Hafzalla says. “This facility expansion demonstrates how public-private partnerships can create long-term environmental and community benefits.”
Negotiations between Pasco County and Reworld regarding the TTF expansion began in April 2020.
