Tamarix Equity Partners LP, a New York-based middle market private equity firm, has invested in Royal Oak Recycling (ROR), a collector and processor of recovered paper and other commercial, industrial and institutional (IC&I) materials based in suburban Detroit.

A statement issued jointly by ROR and Tamarix says the investment has been made to support ROR’s continued growth as a leading independent provider of commercial recycling services.

ROR, which has a history tracing back to the 1930s and has been under its current ownership since 1992, handles high-grade paper, paperboard, plastic and metal and offers document destruction services. The company says it helps recycle more than 500,000 tons of material annually and offers baler, compactor and container placement services.

While based near Detroit, ROR also operates plants or trading offices in or near Miami, St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Buffalo, plus near Louisville, Kentucky, and in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Dayton, Ohio, and is partners in a logistics business near Las Vegas.

“This milestone reflects the dedicated effort of our entire team," says Ed Mamou, CEO of ROR and a second-generation leader of the firm. "We are honored to partner with Tamarix, whose experience, culture and resources align perfectly with our vision to deepen existing partnerships, expand nationally with new partners, and help clients achieve their sustainability and profitability goals.”

Tamarix lists six other portfolio companies, with three of them tied to food services, one in the medical devices sector, one in swimming pool services and one that makes prefabricated modular buildings for commercial and government end markets.

Royal Oak Recycling has built a differentiated platform within the commercial recycling industry, providing customers with unique solutions through its large footprint and diverse capabilities,” says Mark Hauser, Managing Partner at Tamarix. “We look forward to partnering with the Mamou family and ROR’s management team to expand the company’s market share."
