The Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Ontario, has retained SLR Consulting Ltd., Vancouver, British Columbia, to undertake a feasibility study to determine the viability of thermal treatment and energy recovery as the future residual waste management strategy for the region. The municipality consists of the cities of Kitchener, Cambridge and Waterloo, and the townships of Wellesley, Woolwich, Wilmot and North Dumfries, has a population of about 500,000.
The study is being done in response to recommendations made in the region’s recently completed waste management master plan. The project will require expertise in a number of disciplines, including evaluation of thermal treatment alternatives, facilitation of inter-municipal stakeholders and economic analyses, says SLR.
The consulting group says it has assembled an expert team to meet the diverse project requirements, comprised of SLR waste management experts in Canada and the U.K., supported by local sub consultants Urban and Environmental Management Inc., AET Group, Watson and Associates Ltd. and Ehl Harrison Consulting.
The study commenced in July 2014 and is expected to be completed by March 2015.
Ben Arnold, SLR’s waste business sector director, says, “This project win demonstrates how SLR’s significant international waste management experience, together with experience of local experts, can be leveraged to benefit local clients.”
SLR has more than 1,000 employees working from 67 offices in Europe, North America, Australasia and Africa.
